On Dead Subjects...

In conferences, colleagues have often pointed out Antonio Viego's Dead Subjects as a meaningful discussion of psychoanalysis and Latina/o culture. I have to agree, always. It is an invaluable study of a nascent Chicana/o Latina/o psychoanalysis. However, I also can never find a way not to mention that I don't agree with two very important points in his argument: first, that I don't believe there is a group of "ethnically racialized" people (in contrast with those who are "not ethnically racialized"), and, secondly, that race shares or precedes the time of emergence of language is complicated, if not impossible. Language is what makes the understanding of race possible. There's just no way around it.
